Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The utilization of metals for health and healing dates back thousands of years. The intentional exploration of the structure and properties of specific inorganic complexes for medicinal purposes has significantly advanced in the last 50 years since the discovery of cisplatin. To date, cisplatin and its derivatives are used in more than 50% of chemotherapeutic treatments worldwide, highlighting the enormous potential of metal-based therapeutics. Within this lecture, the use of metal complexes for medicinal application is critically reviewed based on recent examples in the clinics and the literature.
Assessment and permitted materials
none
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The lecture shall provide insight into the central role of coordination compounds in medicine. A broad range of examples with different biologically relevant metal ions will lead the students to the understanding of fascinating processes occurring on the interface of medicinal chemistry and bioinorganic chemistry.
