Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Aim: To provide a general understanding of the field of modern industrial organic chemistry and relate it to the content of previous organic chemistry courses.Content: Basic building block chemicals derived from fossile sources: Ethylene, propylene, butadiene and butenes, aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, xylenes), methane and other alkanes, carbon monoxide. Non-petroleum sources of organic chemicals: coal, fats and oils, carbohydrates. Chemical sources of polymers, biodegradability. Specialty chemicals such as detergents, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and dyes. Catalysis in industrial organic chemistry. Sustainability and green chemistry.A on-site visit on a production plan will be also organised in June.
Assessment and permitted materials
Project presentation and Continuous assessment (participation to the discussion and in-class hand-on exercises).
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
20% based on the continuous assessment
80% successful presentation of a group project related to the discussed topics.

All the topics treated during the seminars will be object of the continuous assessment. No test exam will be made only a presentation of a group project related to the discussed topics.
