Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The availability of reliable data on material properties is essential in chemical engineering and for industrial process layout. This course offers the possibility to determine physical-chemical properties of fluids or polymers in escorted individual experiments at the laboratories of the Institute for Materials Chemistry and Research. Especially experiments on glass transition temperature, elasticity, elstoviscosity of polymer solutions and fluid dynamics are offered. Therefore, the course is an ideal supplement for the lecture 'Estimation of physical-chemical Properties' which discusses the theoretical background of the processes and methods for the estimation of properties. The practice comprises the whole scientific process: measurement, data analysis and protocol in a communication letter like write up.
The experimental work covers 1 full week for experiments and data analysis and 1-2 days for the 'communication letter'.
If the participants also visit the lecture 'Estimation of physical-chemical Properties' we use the remaining 25 units for 5 exercises related to the lecture to practice and discuss the methods presented in the lecture. The exercise consist of a homework to prepare the exercise unit and a seminar where the problems are solved in the group. Students who do not participate in the lecture will present their research in a seminar to other students.

Assessment and permitted materials

- performance in experimental work including data analysis
- 4 page written summary of experimental work in form of a communication manuscript
- participation in the seminar/exercise

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

- preparation of and active participation in the exercises (30%) (replaced by seminar talk if not participating in lecture). The exercise participation is mandatory. It is possible to substitute one participation by an alternative task.
- 1 week practical work (45%)
- satisfactory lab report (25%) which has to be delivered within 2 weeks after finishing the practical work
