Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

We introduce the most important methods for the analysis of solid inorganic materials using modern scientific equipment. The course is focused on thermal and thermodynamic methods like DTA (differential thermal analysis), DSC (differential scanning calorimetry), TGA (thermogravimetric analysis) and calorimetry.
The laboratory work includes
1) Phase diagram investigation based on a combination of DTA, metallography (optical microscopy) and X-ray diffraction.
2) Thermodynamic measurements employing DSC and high temperature calorimetry.
3) Thermogravimetric measurements.
4) Measurement of magnetic properties.
5) Wetting and surface tension of liquid alloys.

Personal Registration! Limited number of students. Approximately 15 half-days.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The students gain deeper knowledge of methods used for the characterization of inorganic compounds and alloys (especially thermal methods). They are introduced into the use of modern scientific equipment and learn to interpret their measurement results.

Examination topics

Block course; practical exercises on different assignments in small groups.
Assessment based on practical work and written protocols.
