Aims, contents and method of the course
Topics: Classical biotechnology, genetic engineering and modern biotechnology, site-directed mutagenesis vs. directed evolution, megasynthases for directed synthesis of secondary metabolites, biopolymers with a focus on proteins and DNA, molecular switches with a focus on light switchable catalytic/functional activity, retinal proteins.
Assessment and permitted materials
Examination: oral examination
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Examination topics
Content/Aim: Selected topics illustrate how structural and functional information on biomolecules, and the progress in biophysical and biochemical methods allow turning natural into technologically beneficial functions. The focus of this seminar is to trace the process from the initial characterization of individual biomolecules to their final biotechnological application. In addition to biomolecules which have already been established in biotechnology, examples and topics of the actual literature with high technological potential are discussed.
Qualification: Basic lectures in chemistry and/or biological chemistry
Qualification: Basic lectures in chemistry and/or biological chemistry
