Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Dedicated chemical strategies of surface-modification (silane-grafting; polymerization techniques; molecular imprinting technology; coupling chemistries).
-Chemical assays for quantification of surface-immobilized functionalities.
-Physico-chemical methodologies for the functional characterization of surface-attached (bio-)molecules (chromatographic techniques, such as frontal analysis and van¿t Hoff analysis to derive information on binding thermodynamics; batch-binding assays for the assessment of binding affinity and capacity; specialized spectroscopic techniques, such as ATR-FTIR, to probe the functional behaviors of surface-immobilized molecules).

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course offers a broad introduction into the modern fields of design, synthesis and characterization of surface-functionalized materials of organic and inorganic nature. The goal of this course is to provide a basic understanding of the crucial aspects of surface-chemistry, along with an application-oriented training in skills required in surface-modification and related research fields. Interested students are invited to actively participate in real-world research projects focusing on the design and development of novel chromatographic materials for enantiomer separation, affinity chromatography and target-specific solid phase extraction matrices for bioactive compounds.
