Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Objectives:
Students gain insight into the applications of modern mass spectrometry in research, and can practice the handling of modern analytical instruments and data analysis.

Content:
Hands-on participation in a research project, such as qualitative and/or quantitative mass spectrometric analyses of complex samples with LC-ESI-MS or ICP-MS (bulk, with laser ablation, or with LC), including quality assurance, data analysis, and data evaluation.

Method:
The course is divided into a theoretical part, where the necessary knowledge is conveyed, and a practical part aimed at practically applying this knowledge.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment criteria:
• Active participation, practical work (continuous assessment course)
• In-time submission of the lab report
• Final discussion

Permitted aids:
• Practical part: Laptop/Tablet/Smartphone, calculator, periodic table
• Final discussion: Calculator, periodic table

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirements:
• Attendance at the first meeting is mandatory.
• The attendance in the practical part must be 80%.
• In-time submission of a complete lab report.
• Positive completion of the final discussion
• Without exception, absence from the course, also from short parts, has to be communicated in advance to the course instructor.
• Each partial performance must be completed by the end of the course.

Assessment criteria:
• Active participation
• Quality of the practical work, including responsible handling of samples, instruments, and resources.
• Quality of the data analysis
• Quality of the report, including a discussion of the results
• Final discussion

Examination topics

• The presentations of the theoretical part
• The content of the practical units
• The materials provided or recommended by the instructors
