Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Goal: get known to and understanding of the basics in Physical Chemistry

Content:
Ideal and real gases
Kinetic gas theory,
First, second and third law of thermodynamics,
Phase equilibria,
Mixtures,
Introduction to interfaces,
Limits of classical thermodynamics,
Chemical equilibria,
Introduction to chemical reaction kinetics,
Basics of electro-chemistry,

Methods:
Lecture in presence (if Covid permits), sometimes flipped classroom units – for these units offline videos will be provided via the moodle.
If lectures in presence cannot be provided the lectures will be digital – online and offline units. Offline units will be accompanied by question time and flipped classroom units. The offline videos will be provided via moodle. Online units will be at the same time the lectures are scheduled.
Problems will be provided via moodle which can be solved voluntary.
Participation in Übung zur Physikalischen Chemie (LV 270051) – an accompanying practice - is recommended.

Assessment and permitted materials

Examintion: written exam in presence, 3h

Permitted utilities:
- simple (!) scientific calculator
- set square
- a sheet of paper (DIN A4) with notes written by hand, this is NO copies, NO print outs! Notes: one-sided only! The notes are part of the written exam and have to be handed in at the end of the exam. The notes are graded! A useful application of three notes in the exam is valued 5 points in the exam.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

50% of the points achievable in the written exam are required to pass the exam.
85.0 - 100.0 points: grade 1
75.0 - 84.5 points: grade 2
62.5 - 74.5 points: grade 3
50.0 - 62.0 points: grade 4
0.0 - 49.5 points: grade 5
