Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The proteome of a complex sample shall be analyzed. Therefore, first, the complexity of the sample will be reduced using appropriate separation techniques. After that, an analysis of the sample, applyig mass spectrometry, will be performed. In the course of this practical work, different methods for protein analysis will be presented and practically applied.

Assessment and permitted materials

Performance is monitored during the practical course (interest, cooperation), and furthermore determined on the basis of the quality of the delivered protocol and the acquired knowledge (determined in the closing meeting).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students need positive grades for each part of the performance (interest/cooperation, protocol and closing meeting regarding the acquired knowledge) in order to successfully complete the course.

Examination topics

Background knowledge on the conducted experiments (provided in two theoretical parts and during practicle course): preparation of biological sample material, isolation of different blood constitutents or different cell types, subcellular fractionation (separation of cytoplasmic and nuclear proteins), protein separation techniques using 2D- and 1D-gel electrophoresis, digestion of proteins into petides, identification of proteins using LC-MS/MS analyses, data analysis.
