Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Lipidomics is the science that deals with the concentration-dependent description of hydrophobic biomolecules in space and time in a specific system. This course will introduce you to the basic concept of shotgun lipidomics and will contain lectures but also hands-on work ranging from sample extraction over the analysis of different lipid classes to their identification and visualization within a given lipidome. More explicitly you will learn about the do and don’ts of lipid sample extraction, familiarize you to the concepts of bottom-up and top-down shotgun lipidomics, extract and analyze your own samples with direct infusion experiments, analyze your data with the latest software used in the field and compare your results across different experiments. In this course, the following topics (areas) are presented: brief overview of lipid structure and function, lipid nomenclature, general lipidomics workflow including extraction and sample preparation, overview of lipid analysis, mass spectrometric methods and evaluation strategies for identification, quantification and data visualization. The contents of the courses are worked out through lectures, hands-on work, computational training, discussions, oral presentations of the achieved results, a protocol and an examination. Current publications of scientific literature with an analytical-chemical focus on shotgun lipidomics are discussed with the students. However, central focus of the course is the data analysis of the shotgun lipidomics data.
