    Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

    Objectives:
After completing this practical course, students will understand the possible applications of mass spectrometry and will be able to address related questions on their own, to a certain extent.

    Content:
    • Sample Preparation
    • Working Principle of Different Mass Spectrometers
    • Data Analysis
    • Data Evaluation
    Method:
    • Theoretical overview & research question (real or fictional)
    • Practical participation in a research project, e.g., qualitative and/or quantitative mass spectrometric analyses of complex samples (LC-ESI-MS, ICP-MS with/without LC or LA)
    • Designing an experimental plan
    • Sample preparation
    • Measurement with modern mass spectrometers
    • Evaluation of the obtained data (briefly together and then independently)
    • Preparation of a report

    Assessment and permitted materials

    Assessment criteria:
    • Active participation, practical work (continuous assessment course)
    • Written report
    • In case of doubt, the students may be asked to a grade-relevant final oral assessment.

    Permitted aids:
Will be discussed in the lab course.

    Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

    Minimum requirements:
    • Course with continuous assessment. Therefore: Compulsory attendance during the entire lab course (exceptions only with justified & timely apologies)
    • In-time submission of the written report

    Assessment criteria:
    • Active participation
    • Quality of the practical work, including responsible handling of samples, instruments and resources
    • Quality of data analysis
    • Quality of the report (details will be discussed during the lab course)

    Examination topics

    • The theoretical part
    • The content of the practical part
    • The materials provided or recommended by the instructors

    Reading list

Will be discussed during the course, if needed.
