Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Metal-based therapeutics play an increasing role in medicine, not only with respect to supplementation of essential metals. Platinum-based agents for example are widely used in the fight against cancer. Every second anticancer regimen in clinical oncology is based on the use of platinum complexes. Chemical properties of platinum-based coordination compounds, their synthesis and characterization, as well as their interaction with biologically relevant molecules will be discussed in detail. In addition, other metal compounds exhibiting tumor-inhibiting properties will be included. Furthermore, the use of metal complexes as diagnostics will be discussed.

Assessment and permitted materials

mündliche Abschlussprüfung, ca. 30 min.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The lecture will contribute to a deeper understanding for the central role of metals in vivo as well as diagnostics and therapeutics.
