Aims, contents and method of the course

Primary and secondary metabolism, techniques and reactions of general importance for biosynthesis, isotopic labelling, presentation of representatives of classes of natural products - polyketides: fatty acids, prostaglandins, griseofulvin, flavonoids, erynthromycin-A and monensin;
isoprenoids: isoprene rule, mevalonic acid, condensation of dimethylally- and isopentenyl diphosphate, squalene, ß-corotene, camphor, lanosterol, cyloartenol, cholesterol and steroid hormones;
alkaloids: nicotine, codeine, morphine;
shikimic acid pathway and ß-lactam antibiotics.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Understanding of stepwise biosynthesis of natural products from simple precursors; understanding of simplicity of reactions underlying complexity of natural products.
