Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

1) Effects of anthropogenic influences on rivers: e.g. the Schwechat River, Lower Austria.
Analyses of the most important physico-chemical parameters and ions. Introduction into the methods and practice.
2) Pollution of aquatic systems by heavy metals. Ionic liquids and their possible application for reducing environmental pollution: Extraction of heavy metals from wastewater.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment based on practical work and written protocols, final examination.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Environmental problems and solutions.

Examination topics

Environmental sampling methodology. Field measurements of environmental parameters. Water analyses: flame-AAS, TOC-TN measurements, photometric methods (cations and anions), wet chemical analyses for oxygen content and acid-binding-capacity, ion-chromatography.
Synthesis and characterization of ionic liquids. Practical laboratory work is combined with seminars and discussion groups.
