Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course is complementary to the lectures LV270284 ‚Colloid and Interface Science‘ and/or LV 270114 ‚Estimation of physical-chemical properties‘. The students will employ in laboratory practice theory and concepts introduced in these lectures to gain deeper understanding of the subject. The course offers escorted individual experiments in the laboratories of the Institute for Materials Chemistry & Research. The practice comprises the whole scientific process: experiment, data analysis and protocol in a communication letter like report.
The focus of the experiment is of one oft he following topics (on appointment):
Particle interactions
Particle kinetics
Interfaces
Surfactants
Foams, Emulsions and Suspensions
Rheology of dispersed media
Elastoviscosity of polymers
Polymer solutions
Glass transition

Assessment and permitted materials

- discussion concerning the preparation
- assessment of laboratory work
- protocol/report in form of a communication manuscript

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

It is expected that the students prepare the experiments by studying the literature defined by the supervisor. The working time in the laboratory is 3 weeks (120 h). A comprehensive data analysis with estimation of errors/data reliability/data quality is expected and a lab report in the format of a short journal article has to be delivered within 2 weeks after finishing the practical part.

Preparation is weighted 10%, laboratory work 30%, data analysis 25% and report 35%.
Minimum requirement is thorough conduction of the experiments according to the laboratory regulations and a satisfying laboratory report.

Examination topics

Reading list

Will be provided by the supervisor when defining the individual experiment.
