Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The lecture aims at understanding the purpose of the crystal structure of a chemical compound, from the point of view of a chemist: what information does it provide. Central to this understanding is the description, how to carry out the diffraction experiment, and how to interpret the data and model properly. The lecture focusses on single crystal structures of (metal-)organic compounds. The core concepts are also relevant to mineralogists and materials scientists.
Assessment and permitted materials
oral pen-and-paper examination. Pocket calculator or books are admissible, but should not be of much use. The exam aims for understanding, more than knowing.
While the COVID-19 measures are in place, the exam will follow the common recommendations of the University of Vienna.
While the COVID-19 measures are in place, the exam will follow the common recommendations of the University of Vienna.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The examination addresses both knowledge and understanding. 50% of the questions aiming at knowledge, i.e. learning by heart of the lecture note, are sufficient to pass.
Examination topics
Contents of the lecture and of the excersises.
