Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Based on the foundations of solid state theory, the lecture presents the concepts of the state-of-the-art ab-initio methods for calculating the electronic structure and total energy of solids. From the results of such parameter-free calculations important materials properties are derived, such as: energies of formation, structural stabilities, type and strength of bonding, magnetical ordering, lattice vibrations, critical fracture properties, thermoelectric properties, etc. In the exercises, which accompany the lecture, the students get the opportunity to apply their achieved theoretical knowledge to real-life examples.
Assessment: Oral examination
