Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The students will learn about the physical properties and processes of the Earth and its components, and how they are measured and explored. From these they will gain an understanding of the inner structure of the Earth, its magnetic and gravitational fields, and plate tectonics. They will be introduced to the phenomena of seismicity, isostasy, and tides. They will learn about geophysical exploration methods such as reflection seismic, gravity, magnetics, electrical resistivity, ...
Lectures will combine theoretical presentations with short exercises, reading assignments, and group discussions.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written examination in German or English.
Course material and books allowed.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The result for the exam must be positive (>50/100 Points).

Examination topics

Students will be evaluated on their ability to solve practical problems based on what has been discussed in class. The examination is open-book (conditions will be discussed at the beginning of the course).

Reading list

Will be provided at the beginning of the course.
