Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The students are familiar with the basic physical and chemical concepts used in the thermodynamic analysis of phase equilibria, and they can apply them to geological systems. They are capable of deriving stoichiometric equations for reactions in chemically closed and open systems and to determine the stable phase assemblages for a given set of conditions. In particular, the students are trained in the thermodynamic description of minerals and solid-solutions and of geologically relevant fluids and melts. They have applied the methods of thermodynamics to mineral reactions, melt reactions and to equilibria between minerals and aqueous solutions.

Assessment and permitted materials

There are two written examinations (90 min each) during the semester including
TL 1: 28.4.2020 9:00 - 10:30 via tele conferencing
TL 2: 25.6.2020 10:30 - 12:00 via tele conferencing
The exams will be held during the same hours and at the same location as the course.
TL W 13.7.2020 13:00 room 2C201
On 13.7.2020 13:00 an additional date for taking one examination that has been missed due to illness or an other important reason or for repeating one of the exams to improve the score will be offered. Note that the results from TL W will replace the earlier results, irrespective of whether this increases or reduces the score. People interested in the extra examination date need to sign up till 3.7.2020 by e-mail to raienr.abart@univie.ac.at and specify which one oft the two examinations they want to take. Students, who do not sign up in time, are not permitted to TLW.
It is the student’s responsibility to check for time collisions between the dates for examinations and other activities in their studies in due time.
Permitted materials, devices during the TL are pocket calculator and the PC.

In addition to the written exams, points can be obtained from he delivery of worked examples. A total of 34 points can be obtained this way.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Each exam has a maximum total score of 33 Pts. From the delivery of worked examples a maximum of 34 points can be achieved For passing this course a minimum of 50 points out of a total of maximum 100 points must be reached in a cumulative manner.

Unexcused absence during an examination implies a score of 0 Pts. Only in well-arguable exceptional cases an extra date for examination can be arranged.
