Continuous assessment of course work

The language used is German. Presentations are in English.
Please bring your own laptop. The respective software is freely available, will also be provided one week before the respective course. The software has to be installed prior to the session.

Participation is obligatory. For successfully passing the course the examinations have to been passed with a minimum of 60% of all possible points in total. A maximum of two course units is allowed to miss with justification.

Assessment and permitted materials

Two examination, the third one is just for the students who missed examination 1 or 2 (it can not be used for improve the mark.

1. examination: written; questions of the first part of the course (Weighting: 50%; min. 60% of possible points)

2. examination: provided information about fossil taxa for analysing evolutionary patterns such as distributions and diversity fluctuations.

3. examination: just if examination 1 or 2. was missed.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The students will obtain a solid knowledge of methodological approaches in palaeobiology and how to apply this methods for analysing (1) phylogenetic interrelationships of organisms employing morphological and molecular data, (2) the completeness of the fossil record, (3) palaeobiogeographic relations, and (4) diversity and diversification patterns through time

Examination topics

Each course unit will start with an introductory lecture (ca. 90 min) and commences with a practical part (ca. 90 min). Students are supposed to bring their own laptops. Necessary software packages is freely available, but will be provided one week before the session.

Reading list

Literature will be recommended on the first day of the course.
