Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Active work on a research project or master's thesis in geology, paleobiology, and geobiology. This may be a research project, which is independent of the future Master's thesis in terms of content, or, alternatively, it may be a future component of the Master's thesis.
Within the context of current research in geology and paleobiology & geobiology, students will be able to plan and implement a small research project leading toward the master's thesis. This includes the state of the art of research, the formulation of testable hypotheses, the application of analytical and statistical methods to new questions, the structuring the necessary work (field, laboratory, modeling) as well as the presentation and interpretation of the results and preparation of a report in the style of a short publication.

Assessment and permitted materials

Registration for the course requires that the person wishing to participate finds a supervisor for the research project in advance from among the persons designated as "lecturers" in the course book. The course supervisor and the future supervisor of the Master's thesis do not necessarily need to be identical; however, this is very much possible. Immediately after online registration for the course, the student must inform the course director (in SS 2022 ronald.miletich-pawliczek@univie.ac.at) of the supervisor by e-mail - with open cc: to the supervisor, please. Failure to do so will result in automatic deregistration from the course at the end of the late registration period.
The successful completion of the research project must be documented by writing a report (about three pages) in the style of a short publication. The required contents and further details will be discussed and clarified individually with the supervisor at the beginning of the research project. The report must be submitted by 16.09.2022 latest. Any other deadline must be agreed on with the responsible supervisor.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Field of master specialization, master thesis topic search, participation, active practical work on the master thesis. The report will be graded by the respective supervisor.
