Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The students describe the different state-of-the-art techniques for the remediation or safeguarding of sites contaminated with environmental pollutants and assess their geo- and hydrochemical processes in a site-specific and problem-oriented manner. They are able to develop a concept for the assessment of an area of suspected contamination and can recall the relevant sampling and analytical techniques. By comparison of measured values with current legislation and threshold values they are able to suggest the necessary measures for safeguarding or decontamination.

The course is split into lectures, exercises, problem-oriented presentation of site remediation issues by students and an excursion.

Assessment and permitted materials

Remediation of inorganic contaminants (FvdK): 2 partial course assessments, total 50%
25% oral presentation of problem-oriented research papers or reports on dates
agreed with students
25% written evaluation, 45 min., 24.05.2017

Remediation of organic contaminants: 2 partial course assessments, total 50%
35% exercises to be handed in by 09 May 2017 (MK & GS)
15 % report and exercises to be handed in by 13 June 2017 (TR)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Remediation of inorganic pollutants:
the written exam will reflect on course content (lectures) and on 2 topics presented by the students. These topics will be announced before the exam. The maximum points for the exam are 25, for the presentation are 25.
The presentation evaluation is done according to
1) preparation of the topic (5)
2) use of additional sources and information, also coupling to course content (5)
3) quality of presentation (10)
4) quality and level of the Q&A part of the presentation (5)
Attending students receive evaluation sheets, results will be taken into account
For the student presentations 80% attendance of the students is mandatory

Remediation of organic pollutants (MK & GS & TR). Exercises: directly following the lecture, exercises will aim at applying the concepts discussed during the class. There will be time dedicated to solve the exercise with the support of the lecturers.
Report (TR): The report will be about an excursion to a contaminated site with ongoing remediation measures (attending the excursion is thus compulsory)

Examination topics

Remediation of inorganic pollutants:
written exam
concepts of site remediation
practice of site assessment
site characterization strategies
remediation techniques for inorganic contaminants

Remediation of organic pollutants: application of sorption and degradation concepts for remediation, analysis and sampling of soil samples, risk assessment and decision making, principle, advantages and disadvantages of the remediation techniques, contaminanted land Management, legal background of site remediation
