Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Goals:
- comprehension of fundamental concepts of digital image analysis with special emphasis on image data of microstructures of geomaterials and their quantification
- ability to use the open source software imageJ/Fiji
- ability to segment, analyse and interpret images from various sources (e.g. from light-, electron- and x-ray fluorescence microscopy)

Content:
- computer-based, qualitative and quantitative analysis of image data
- digital images, formats and properties
- image preprocessing, filter algorithms
- image models, segmentation based on threshold, gradient and clustering methods
- analysis of phase areas and volumes, pore and grain size distributions, error estimation, shape analysis, determination of fabric anisotropy, spatial distributions and neighbourhood analysis, statistical methods of fabric quantification (FFT, ACF)
