Aims, contents and method of the course

1. Definitions: deposit, occurrence, raw material, reserve, resource; ore deposit systematics; economic geology, raw material policy

2. Deposits associated with ultramafic rocks: chromui, nickel, platinum-group metals;

3. Deposits associated with granitoids: tin, Tungsten, Niobium, tantalum, Lithium, molybdenum, copper:

4. Uranium deposits

5. Overview on methods of exploration and mineral propsection; case studies

6. Hydrothermal ore deposits: carbonate-, sediment- and volcanic-hosted sulfide ores

7. Sedimentary and exhalative deposits: iron, manganese, aluminium

8. Gold and silver deposits

9. Industrial Mineral deposits
10. Exercizes with Hand specimen of different ore types

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Deposits in ultramafic rocks (chromium, nickel, platinum) and granitoids (tin, tungsten, niobium/tantalum, copper, molybdenum; base metal deposits, gold, diamonds; sedimentary deposits; exploration methods; economic geology

Examination topics

Lecture, exercize with Hand specimen; one-day field trip to an ore deposit in Austria (date and location will be communicated later)
