Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Students learn to use structural geological methods in applied geological problems. The course discusses geotechnical applications (predictions of rock and fault properties, rock classifications), hydrogeological applications (description and properties of fractured and faulted aquifers), and the use of structural geological methods in reservoir geology (analysis of hydrocarbon storage rocks). In addition to the well-known basic structural geological methods (participation requirement: structural geology and tectonics), further analyzes such as the determination of interface properties and density, the characterization of faults and fault rocks as well as structural geological core recordings are presented.
It is planned to include exercises (e.g., in the OMV core lab) and excuursions (e.g., Semmering Tunnel, OMV drill site). Scope, content and timing of the exercises/excursions will be discussed in the first lecture.

Assessment and permitted materials

2 Written performance assessments
Home exercises
Participation in the exercises/excursions or, alternatively, positive completion of exercise examples in the lecture hall

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

2 written performance assessments of 35 points each, positive from 36 points (sum of the results of both tests)

Exercises/excursions: Assessment of solutions to exercises, participation in excursions (30 points, positive from 16 points)

Both parts (written tests and exercises/excursions)must be positive

Examination topics

Content of lectures and material available through Moodle

Reading list

Text books Structural Geology (e.g., H. Fossen) and literature indicated in lectures
