Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The students are familiar with the basic processes that control the kinetics of mineral reactions or, more generally, reactions in the solid state. In particular, they are aware of the links among thermodynamic driving force, diffusion and interface reaction. They can extract and quantify the processes underlying the formation of reaction microstructures such as composition zoning, corona structures, exsolution microstructures, precipitates, dissolution and replacement phenomena, grain coarsening and oriented intergrowth. They can apply tools that allow for quantitative statements on the dynamics of geological systems.
Assessment and permitted materials
This course comprises pi and npi parts, examination and course assessment follow the rules for pi courses.
There are two examinations during the semester including
TL 1: 22.11.2023 max. 50 points
TL 2: 31.1.2024 max. 50 points
The exams will be held during the same hours and at the same location as the course. It is the student’s responsibility to check for time collisions with other activities in their studies in due time.
On 23.2.2024 13:00 Uhr, room 2B204, Eberhard Clar Saal, an additional date for taking one examination that has been missed due to illness or another important reason will be offered. People interested in this extra examination date need to sign up till 19.2.2024 and specify which one of the two examinations they want to take.
Unjustified absence during an examination leads to assignment of 0 points.
For the exams a PC in the PC lab may be used.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
For passing this course a minimum of 50 points out of a total of maximum 100 points must be reached in a cumulative manner.Attendance at the first npi unit is compulsory. If the attendance is not documented, the student will be excluded from the course. Exceptions from this rule are only possible, when there are defendable reasons for the lack of attendance.Signing out of the course independently is possible till the end of the registration period via u:space.Grading is based on the points collected in the two TL out of a maxiumum of 100 points.Total score (points) grade
