Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The students are able to recognize, examine and systematically describe the geological evidence of past climatic fluctuations, in particular ice ages and the Quaternary. You have knowledge of glacial sedimentology. Regional aspects of the Quaternary are discussed and recognized in the field. The students identify advanced methods of Quaternary research.

Assessment and permitted materials

Exam. Details to be provided at the start of the course.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

MA-ERD-G-3, MA-ERD-P-2, MA-ERD-W-2.4:
Sedimentologie und Stratigraphie
Positiver Abschluss der Lehrveranstaltung (pi) (5 ECTS-Punkte)

Examination topics

We will look at a broad array of phenomena, and deposits from the Meosoproterozoic to the present day! We will examine ice sheets, valley glaciers, marine and terrestrial glacially-influenced environments. We will use the outstanding Quaternary to modern examples from Austria. We will also look at the Quaternary of east England and western Denmark. We will examine the Late Carboniferous of southern Africa. We will explore the deserts of North Africa and Arabia in search of the Late Ordovician. As we dive into really deep time, we will talk about the Cryogenian of the western USA, Namibia and Australia. The oldest examples will come from the Siderian of South Africa, approximately 2.2 billion years old. We will also look upwards at outwards to Mars. Along this journey, we will constantly reflect on what is representative upon the surface of an icy planet, and what secrets are contained in the sediments.
