Objective of this lecture is the qualitative and quantitative geological interpretation of aerial stereo pairs and a brief introduction in digital remote sensing.
Qualitative interpretation and mapping of the landscape (geology, geo-hazards, tectonic structures, geomorphology) is based on the recognition of texture patterns of aerial stereo pairs. Change detection is used for geological perpetuation of evidence.
Use of quantitative methods for calculation of image scale depending on the relief, distance measurements in distorted aerial pictures, measurement of absolute stereoscopic parallaxes for vertical distance measurements, and geo-statistic interpretation of photo-lineaments.
Basic knowledge in photogrammetry is necessary for understanding the production of orthophotos and stereo-orthophotos. Additionally, excursions are offered to the Austrian Geodetic Survey (Bundesamt für Eich- und Vermessungswesen, Wien).
Relation between theory and practical exercises of 12 lecture units is 10:90, and geological interpretation of aerial stereo-pairs is mostly dedicated to different mass movements in Austria.
Lecture is good for 2.8 ECTS points. Certificate results from final oral examination. Script is available for students.
