Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The inorganic section of the module will involve the production, emission and environmental behavior of major trace metals as mercury, lead, cadmium and arsenic. Concepts of distribution of trace metal concentrations, transport, speciation, analysis and environmental effects will be presented and discussed. Bioavailability and uptake into the food chain will be elaborated on examples of the free ion activity and the biotic ligand models. The role of complexation (especially by natural organic matter) and adsorption as well as the influence of water chemistry including redox gradients will be presented.
During the course students will present and discuss scientific papers dealing with environmental pollution, pollutant behavior and analysis and do exercises in Environmental Problem Solving

Assessment and permitted materials

The total grade for the module MA-ERD-W-4.2 (100 points max.) will be assembled from a maximum of 40 points for the VU Inorganic Pollutants and maximum of 60 points for the VU Organic Pollutants. The subdivision of the points for grading for each part, can be found in the assessment description for each part.

The 3 partial examinations are:
35% (14P) written exam, 45 min. on 8th June 2022; 35% (14P) presentation of a scientific paper or report on dates agreed with the students.
30% (12P) exercises to be handed in within one week after the exercise has been handed out. In cases of illness (with doctors certificate) latest until 15.06.2022

The grading scheme is as follows:

> 87% (1); 75-86 % (2); 63-74 % (3); 50-62 % (4); < 50 % (5)35%

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The students know the hydrochemical behavior of the important inorganic compounds in the water cycle, they are familiar with the concept of speciation and the aquatic thermodynamics. They know the important redox systems as well as the basics of transport phenomena. The can recall classes of contaminants, their sources, transport and distribution as well as their predominant sinks. They know the substance specific behavior of relevant pollutants and can describe the different environmental hazards arising from pollution. Important analytical techniques are known
