Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The organic section will involve the chemical structure, phase transport processes, transformation, and risk assessment of organic contaminants in the environment. Specific types of organic contaminants, their analysis, and cases of pollution will be discussed.

Assessment and permitted materials

The total grade for the module MES3.3 (MA-ERD-W-4.2) will be assembled from a maximum of 40 points for the "Inorganic Pollutants" and a maximum of 60 points for the "Organic Pollutants" (maximum 100 points in total). The subdivision of the points for grading for each part, can be found in the assessment description for each part accordingly.
The grading scheme is as follows:
> 87% (1); 75-87 % (2); 63-74 % (3); 50-62 % (4); < 50 % (5)

The examination of the "Organic Pollutants" is based on three individual assessments. The contribution of each part to the final grade of the module is given in brackets. Examinations will not be repeated (PI) since no individual exam is mandatory to pass the module.

Assessment for the "Organic Pollutants" (total of 60 points max):
20 points for the exam (09.06.2022)
20 points for the exercises (due dates will be announced)
20 points for the student project presentation (02.06.2022)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The students know the environmental fate and transport processes of organic compounds in the environment, they are familiar with the concept of phase transfer and pollutant transformation. The can recall classes of organic pollutants, their sources, transport and distribution as well as their predominant sinks. They know the substance specific behavior of relevant pollutants and can describe the different environmental hazards arising from pollution. Important analytical techniques can be explained.
