Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Students will have in-depth knowledge about processes and mechanisms of environmental (hydro)chemistry and geochemistry that play a central role in environmental systems. Students know methods of analytical chemistry used in environmental chemistry and will get training in the laboratory.

Assessment and permitted materials

A maximum number of 160 points can be awarded to students participating in exams, exercises, and a laboratory course.

A) Four Short Exams (total of 60 points):
Short exams (45 minutes) are held during the semester, each worth 15 points. The exam dates are
1. exam: October 21 (Hofmann/vd Kammer); 2. exam: November 6 (Krämer); 3. exam November 21 (Zumstein/Pati); 4. exam December 12 (Hüffer/Göldner/vd Kammer, Krämer).

B) Exercises (total of 60 points):
4 blocks (1. Hofmann/vdKammer; 2. Krämer; 3. Zumstein/Pati; 4. Hüffer/Göldner/vdKammer/Krämer), each 15 points. Further details will be announced via Moodle.

Laboratory (40 points)
The laboratory course will consist of six basic experiments in environmental chemistry (6 points each) and introductory/safety sessions (4 points). The laboratory course will be held from December 16 until January 30. Participation in all parts of the laboratory course is mandatory to finish this course successfully.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

A total of 160 points can be reached by successful participation of the exams, exercises, and the laboratory course. The points from all these activities are accumulated an the grade is applied to the total number of points reached during the semester. The following grading scheme will be applied:
% - Grade
> 87.5 - 1
75-87.49 - 2
62.5-74.99 - 3
50-62.49 - 4
0-49.99 - 5
At least 50 % of the total points (i.e. 80 points) need to be accumulated to pass. However, keep in mind that attending all parts of the laboratory course is mandatory to pass this course.

Examination topics

1. Exercise and exam (30): Basics of aquatic chemistry and env. chemistry of trace metals (Hofmann & vd Kammer)
2. Exercise and exam (30): thermodynamic modelling and kinetics and redox processes (Krämer & Singh)
3. Exercise and exam (30): env. organic chemistry (Zumstein & Pati)
4. Exercise and exam (30): Analytical chemistry (Hüffer, Göldner, vd Kammer, Krämer)
5. Laboratory course (40): (Zumstein & Pati)
