Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The scientific basis of the climate crisis, biodiversity loss and environmental pollution is widely known – as are many of the solutions. The real challenge today is to translate existing knowledge into concrete action. This is where this lecture series comes in.

We will focus on the questions: How do we move from knowledge to action? What can we do – especially in cities like Vienna – to act within the boundaries of the planet and thus shape a future worth living? Who is this ‘we’ anyway – who must and can act? Which actors are needed, what obstacles stand in the way and how can they be overcome? How can cooperation between science and public administration be made more effective?

The lecture series brings together leading experts from science and public administration. Speakers from the University of Vienna, TU Vienna, MedUni Vienna, WU Vienna, ÖAW, HU Berlin and the University of Oslo, as well as representatives of the City of Vienna, will jointly shed light on key topics such as water, agriculture and nutrition, mobility, construction, economy, green and blue spaces, nature conservation, health, consumption, energy and participation.

Each unit consists of two compact inputs (approx. 30 minutes each), followed by a moderated discussion with the students. The overarching story ‘A Day in the Life of a Viennese’ gives the lecture series a local, everyday context. The MOOC ‘Environmental Emergencies: Navigating Climate Change, Biodiversity Loss and Environmental Pollution’ is available to provide more in-depth information on specific topics.

This lecture series is organised by the Environment and Climate Research Hub (ECH) at the University of Vienna in cooperation with the City of Vienna.

The main language of the lecture series is German, but two of the course units will also be held in English.
