Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course consists of weekly lectures and exercies.

The lectures are structured into two parts. The first part will be given by Aiko Voigt and will treat the following topics: spatial patterns of surface warming; relative humidity and precipitation in today's climate and their response to warming; energetic framework of the ITCZ; extreme precipitation events; carbon budgets and their relevance for the Paris agreement; tipping points.

The second part will be given by Leo Haimberger and will treat topics related to climate diagnostics. It will cover the analysis of stochastic processes, requirements for climate observations, properties of climate reaalysis products, EOF analysis, mass and enthalpy budgets and climate change attribution (optimal fingerprints).

The exercises will be based on the respective lecture units. They will consist of both pure computational tasks and programming tasks on the TeachingHub. The exercise assignments are designed to help students understand and apply the contents of the lecture.

Assessment and permitted materials

For each of the two lecture parts, a separate oral examination will be done.

The exercise part will be graded according to the exercise sheets. The course is structured as "Kreuzerlübungen". The students work on the exercises at home and indicate the number of completed tasks on the Moodle page. In addition, students must be able to present the solutions to the tasks in front of the class.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The final grade will be calculated as follows:

40% exercise grading
30% oral examination of first lecture part by Aiko Voigt
30% oral examination of second lecture part by Leo Haimberger

Each of the three components need to be completed.

To pass the exercise part, at least 50% of the tasks must be ticked and at least two blackboard performances must be completed positively.

Final gradine scale:

Grade 5: < 50%
Grade 4: 50-62,5%
Grade 3: 62,5-75%
Grade 2: 75-87,5%
Grade 1: 87.5%

Examination topics

For the two oral examinations: entire content of the respective lecture part
