Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The overall aim of the course is to introduce and adopt a concept of instability that leads to the formation of eddies at many scales in the atmosphere. On the synoptic-scale, the quasi-geostrophic theory and analysis is applied to the synoptic-scale motions that result from baroclinic instability. The course also provides an introduction to the dynamics and phenomena at the mesoscale, some of which result from small-scale instabilities.

*Baroclinic instability (hydrodynamic instability, baroclinic instability, the two-layer model, energetics of baroclinic waves, cyclogenesis).
*Mesoscale dynamics (definition of mesoscale, fronts and frontogenesis, small-scale instabilities, symmetric instability).
