Aims, contents and method of the course

This one-day workshop will cover multiple aspects of the hydrology and carbon cycling processes of peatland ecosystems. We will investigate the mechanisms of patterned pool formation, and the role of the critical zone structure beneath peatlands in regulating pool formation/development.
We will consider the uncertainty of peatlands as carbon sinks and the factors controlling the emissions of gaseous-phase methane from these unique wetland ecosystems. We will also consider the controls on ebullition of gas bubbles and how methane fluxes may change with a warming climate. The use of geophysical imaging methods to address these questions will be highlighted.

The course requires continuous attendance (> 75 %) with active participation in the scientific discussion.
