Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of the excursion is to get acquainted with research institutions in Vienna (and its surroundings) that are active in geophysical research and applications. We will visit them during the later part of the semester (June/July, ideally on-site). The emphasis of the visits will be on understanding the kind of geophysical equipment that the institutions possess, which data analysis methods they use, and what kind of goals they pursue in the geophysical applications.

ZAMG (Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics):
Austrian Earthquake Service, Wiechert Seismometer.

GBA (Geological Survey of Austria):
Geoelectrics etc.

BEV (Federal Office of Metrology and Surveying): Gravimetric instrumentation.

AIT (Austrian Institute of Technology):
Vibration measurements, sound.

Conrad-Observatory:
Observatory magnetics, seismology, gravimetry.

LBI (Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Archaeological Prospection and Virtual Archaeology/Inst. of Archeology, Uni Wien): radar, geoelectrics, magnetics, for near-surface applications (archeology).

ZAMG-applied geophysics.

Assessment and permitted materials

The visits will be followed by a brief examination, mostly oral, and in cases noting some elements of the visit on paper.
