Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The aim of the course is to provide the students with a solid foundation on statistical methods used in astronomy and astrophysics. This will be achieved through lectures containing the following topics: Probability Distributions, Statistical Inference, Hypothesis Testing, and Linear Regression Modelling.
Assessment and permitted materials
The total grade will be a combination of 60% exam part and 40% exercise part.The exam part will split into two equally weighted exams:
30% exam1 + 30% exam 2 = 60% exam partThe exercise part will contain exercise sheets and a mini project, equally weighted:
15% exercise sheets + 25% mini project = 40% exercise part

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The submission of all exercise sheets and of the mini project is required.A total of maximum 100 points can be achieved. Each of the two parts (exam and exercise) has to be passed separately, i.e., a minimum of 30 points for the two exams combined has to be reached as well as a minimum of 20 points for the combined exercise sheets and mini project.If the minimum number of points in each of the two parts is reached, the combined points lead to the following final integer grade:
87.50 - 100.0 => 1 (excellent)
75.00 - 87.49 => 2 (good)
62.50 - 74.99 => 3 (satisfactory)
50.00 - 62.49 => 4 (sufficient)If the minimum number of points in either or both of the two parts is not reached the final integer grade is 5 (fail)
