Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Within this seminar, we will deal with "Data Mining" and "Data Handling of Big Data" in Astronomy. Primarily, we will concentrate ourselves on the ESO Science Archive Facility (http://archive.eso.org) and the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (MAST, http://archive.stsci.edu/). Several different problems and topics will be tackled. How are all data for a single or a group of objects retrieved? How can these data be reduced and analysed? Several methods and tools in that respect will be presented. In addition, a specific project will be executed from the planing phase until the actual publication. For the seminar, we recommend the book "Data-Rich Astronomy: Mining Synoptic Sky Surveys" by Stefano Cavuoti (2015, LAP LAMBERT, Academic Publishing).
