Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims: Deeper understanding of the properties, relations and environment of galaxies in the local universe.
Content: Galaxy structures and their stellar populations, active galactic nuclei, galaxy types and their environments
Methods: lectures and paper presentations

Assessment and permitted materials

Mulitple-Choice exam in last lecture week, paper presentations in the exercise groups, and attendance. No tools are allowed for the exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The final grade is computed as follows:
* 50% based on exam (Grade 1-5, grading scheme is shown below). To successfully complete the lecture it is mandatory to pass the exam (i.e. grade 4 or better).
* 40% based on presentations in exercise groups in teams of 2-3 students each; grades 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3 or 5;
Attendance: missing more than two exercise groups without excuse results in downgrading by one grade unit (e.g., from 1 to 2) for each missed exercise group;
* 10% based active participations by asking questions during presentations by colleague students;
Contributions to all parts of VU are mandatory. Only for those students who failed to pass the 1st exam, a 2nd exam will be conducted around end of September 2023.

Grading scheme for exam:
below 50% -> grade 5
50% - 62.499% -> grade 4
62.5% - 74.999% -> grade 3
75% - 87.499% -> grade 2
87.5% - 100% -> grade 1
