Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims:
Introduction to the physics of the Interstellar Medium (Part I) and the structure and dynamics of Milky Way (Part II).

Contents:

Part I. ISM physics:
- ISM components
- Observations: atomic gas, dust extinction, dust emission, and molecular lines
- Thermodynamics: cooling and heating
- Multiphase ISM
- Turbulence & scaling laws
- Molecular clouds & Astrochemistry

Part II. Structure and dynamics of the Milky Way:
- Introduction to the Milky Way
- Galactic Dynamics overview
- Stellar Populations and Star Formation
- Galactic Structure
- Evolution of the Milky Way

Assessment and permitted materials

Participants will take part in 2 written Exams:
- Part I (early Dec.): Interstellar Medium
- Part II (late Jan): Milky Way
The course also includes practical sessions including paper discussions and hands-on exercises.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum:
- Pass both Part I & II written Exams (>50% points)
- Actively participate in the Practical sessions including paper discussion and hands-on exercises.
- Final grade = Exams (60%) + Practical sessions (40%)

- Grading scheme:
(percentage) = (points)
89-100% = 1
76-88% = 2
63-75% = 3
50-62% = 4
0-49% = 5
