An overview of peculiar stars across the Hertzsprung-Russell-Diagram is given. However, what defines a star as "peculiar"? Which astrophysical processes are essential for a peculiarity? Which role play peculiar stars in Astrophysics? The observational aspects and theoretical models will be discussed. Another important issue is the detection of peculiar stars on the basis of photometric and spectroscopic data. We will introduce in modern methods covering this essential topic.
