This is a Seminar where ongoing research work from the Alves group at the Sternwarte is presented and discussed. It offers a window into how research in observational astronomy is done with modern ground- and space-based telescopes and how new data science approaches are developed and used to tackle the new data challenges. Master and PhD students with an interest in observational astronomy will benefit from the lively discussions and problem-solving ethos of the Alves group.

Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This is a Seminar where ongoing research work from the Alves group at the Sternwarte is presented and discussed. It offers a window into how research in observational astronomy is done with modern ground- and space-based telescopes and how new data science approaches are developed and used to tackle the new data challenges. Master and PhD students with an interest in observational astronomy will benefit from the lively discussions and problem-solving ethos of the Alves group.
Assessment and permitted materials
The students will work on a small project of interest to the group and must present their work at the end of the Semester.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Master and PhD students are welcome to attend the Seminar. Attendance and the will to engage with new problems are critical.
Examination topics
A basic understanding of front-line observational telescopes and techniques. Presentation of results of small projects with an eye for scientific content, clarity, and efficiency in communicating complex data.
Reading list
Recent refereed papers or other necessary literature are to be distributed during the seminar.
