Arrival and departure:
Arrival and departure will be organized by the participants themselves.
There is a direct train connection between Vienna and Krems/Donau (recommendation: REX 4, 08:03 Wien Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof - 09:08 Krems/Donau).
From Gneixendorf Walzerbrunnen the bus lines 5 and 710 go to Krems/Donau train station (recommendation: departure 16:06 (5)/ 17:02 (710) / 17:06 (5), continuation from Krems with REX 4 at 16:22/17:22 to Vienna Franz-Josefs train station, arrival 17:30/18:30).

Catering:
Bring your own food for the day.

Costs:
Costs of travel, own meals, and the tour through the Asbacher Klosterkeller (10 €, +5 € for optional subsequent wine tasting lasting until ~17:00) are to be paid by the participants. IMPORTANT: The cost of the tour (10 €) or tour + wine tasting (15 €) must be brought in cash and paid on site.

Other notes:
During the excursion a hiking distance of 10 to 12 km and about 400 meters of altitude will be covered.
Sturdy shoes are an obligatory requirement for participation! In addition, the excursion will also take place in moderately rainy conditions. Therefore, it is recommended to bring appropriate weatherproof clothing.
The excursion ends when the tour through the Asbacher Klosterkeller is finished.

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Students will receive a practical introduction to the Quaternary landscape development of the southeastern Waldviertel region at the lower Krems River in Lower Austria. In addition to a large-scale physiogeographical classification, the landforms and sediments that developed especially during the Pleistocene and provide the basis for the early settlement of anatomically modern humans in the region will be covered. Students will produce their own descriptions of the landscape, sediments, and soils in order to deduce the processes of formation and discuss them in the group. They will also gain insight into the reconstruction of paleoenvironmental conditions based on the available sedimentary archives. Furthermore, the agriculture resulting from the natural conditions will be discussed, which will end with a visit to a local winery.
For the subsequent preparation of individual excursion protocols, taking notes is highly recommended.

Assessment and permitted materials

Physical (topographic) map and excursion protocol

Content, format and size of the map: self-made physical (topographic) map of the excursion area with course and stations; max. DIN A4 format;
Content, format and extent of the excursion report: summary of the most important contents in scientific report format, with selected photos; extent: max. 6 DIN A4 pages excl. title page and literature (line spacing 1.5; font size 11).

Submission format and deadline: Please send both parts separately as two pdf-files via e-mail (max. 12 MB in total) to the LV management by 09.06.2024 (if postponed: 07.07.2024) at the latest.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirements:
- Participation in the excursion
- Submission of the written performance reviews until due date
- Achievement of at least 50% of the possible total percentage

Assessment standard and evaluation criteria:
- Map (50%): Map content, field trip itinerary and stops (50%); own contribution (25%); formalia (25%)
(Please follow basic cartographic standards, i.e. formal and factual components of a map!)
- Protocol (50%): Completeness and quality of summary of field trip content (75%); formalia and language (25%)

Grading scheme:
≥87.5%: very good (1)
75 - <87.5%: good (2)
62.5 - <75%: satisfactory (3)
50 - <62.5%: sufficient (4)
<50%: insufficient (5)
