Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The tropics and subtropics are frequently present in the international media, mainly when drought or flooding threatens the food security of the people in these regions. Often the massive clearing of tropical rainforest finds its way into news. Additionally the tropics and subtropics are prone to fire. Furthermore the arid and semiarid tropics and subtropics are affected by water scarcity which might be intensified in the future.

In the seminar the basics of resource management are covered. Beside a focus on the ecological conditions (climate, soil, water, and vegetation) various land use systems within their socio-cultural circumstances are discussed.
