Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Earth observation from space borne sensors is a fast developing technology. New fields of remote sensing application are evolving due to the improvement of spatial and spectral resolution. But data acquisition alone is not sufficient to benefit from these technological developments. It is rather necessary to develop methods and techniques for transforming the huge amount of data acquired by satellite sensors into useful information for the different fields of application. A prerequisite to perform this task is not only the knowledge of basic principles of remote sensing but also expertise in computer assisted processing of digital imagery. Thus the course aims at providing practical expertise in the processing of digital satellite imagery.
During the course basic image processing steps are presented, discussed and applied to satellite images. ERDAS Imagine is used as image processing software, which is available as multi-license at the department. The practical work is performed in small groups on PCs in the GIS lab.
