Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

There is no clear and legally binding definition of "Regional policy" and "Spatial Development" in Austria. In fact different public authorities at the national and regional level are influencing the development of Austria as a whole or of parts of the country. They are focusing on the following topics:
- Strengthening of the knowledge base and innovation capacity of companies, research institutions and educational facilities
- supporting regional, (trans)national and international economic activities
- Increasing resource- and energy efficiency, in particular the use of renewed energy sources and new technologies
- climate change adaptation strategies
- strengthening rural areas (e.g., regional products, quality of life, mobility etc.)
- city-periphery cooperation etc.

These key aspects of regional policy will be presented and discussed on the basis of practical examples and case-studies. In addition to the inputs from the lecturer, we will concentrate on the elaboration of a common understanding of the presented case-studies. Methods of the course are: inputs from the lecturer, discussions, student presentations, expert lectures.

Assessment and permitted materials

Course attendance is compulsory and active participation in the course will be honored. In addition to inputs from the lecturer, the focus will be on the elaboration of a common understanding of the content. The services to be provided by the students consist of a Regular participation as well as the preparation of a topic with an oral presentation and a written seminar paper. The oral presentation, a written seminar paper and active participation in the course will form the basis for the assessment.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance is compulsory. Active participation is desired. In addition, the preparation of a topic with an oral presentation and a written paper is required. Grading is based on the presentation (30%), the following housework (30%) and active participation in the course (40%).

Examination topics

Course documentation, participation, contributions of the students, The topic of the paper should either be selected from a list of topics provided by the lecturer or be based on own suggestions.
