Aims, contents and method of the course

The key teaching aim of the seminar is to learn how to write a seminar paper and to apply scientific research and dissemination methods in academic work in economic geography. Thematically, the seminar will focus on the topic “regional transformation processes and sustainable regional development”. Special attention will be given to different types of such networks and their spatial configurations. Students are instructed to compile the basic conceptual principles, to collect empirical material, and to relate both through an analysis.
The main requirements are a seminar paper and its presentation on a sub-theme developed by the students themselves in small groups. The joint sessions of the seminar group serve to accompany this process. In the joint session methods of literature research and analysis are discussed, a tighter focus on the research subject is developed and students are trained to formulate and sharpen research questions. Peer learning is especially emphasised.

Assessment and permitted materials

- Seminar paper (50%)
- Presentation of the seminar paper (30%)
- Presence and contributions to the discussions in the classroom (20%)
