Aims, contents and method of the course

Vienna’s urban planning strategies define the Danube River Area as one of the 13 target areas of urban development. “Waterfront Vienna” tries to connect the Vienna city center with the cities various bodies of water. It consists of housing and real estate development along the Danube River as well as of improved public spaces for leisure and recreation, including better access to the river. The main areas of planning and developing “Waterfront Vienna” are the “Donaukanal”, the former “Nordbahnhof”-Area, the Danube City, and the “Alte Donau”. Next to these main areas there are the South-Eastern riverbanks, the Vienna Marina and the Vienna Harbor Freudenau.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The students will get detailed information on the urban planning target area “Waterfront Vienna”; and visit five sites on two excursion days. The students will have to hand in a short reflection paper after the excursions. Grades are given according to the student’s participation and to the quality of the paper.
