Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Environmental migration is a key issue today. The question of how environmental and climate change affect migratory movements is the subject of controversial debate not only among scientists, but also among politicians and the general public. The number of people moving for environmental reasons is expected to increase, especially in light of climate change predictions. It is important to understand the mechanism that links the environment, its changes and human mobility. This understanding is necessary to be able to establish appropriate policies.
The objective of the seminar is to understand how the number of environmental migrants can be estimated and how empirical models work. We will also address the policy issues surrounding the issue of migration. The issue of vulnerability and the migration decision making will also be addressed.

Assessment and permitted materials

The seminar includes theoretical lectures, reading and exercises. For the successful completion of the seminar the following achievements are required: see next section.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

To make this seminar a success, the student will be offered several activities during the semester. These activities (reading, writing work, data research, conceptual framework, exchange with the teacher, with peers) will enable him/her to prepare his/her final report, the term paper. Three performances are compulsory. Every performance component will receive a grade. The two mid-term performances account for 25% each and the term paper (4000-5000 words) for 50% of the course’s grade.

Examination topics

For a positive final assessment, the main performance (seminar paper) must be passed. Furthermore, for a successful completion of the course all assignments must be submitted.
The performance is passed if it has been evaluated with at least the grade 4.
The student will be particularly attentive to the following points: citation of sources and bibliographical references, adequate illustrations, precise vocabulary, reflexive approach, positioning in the existing literature and in the social debate.

Reading list

The reading list will be posted on Moodle.
