Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims:
The economic preconditions of Austrian cities and regions are changing considerably due to internationalisation and the (spatial) fragmentation of value-added-chains. The course deals with essential research questions in this context. We introduce essential theories and methods in urban and regional economics as well as foreign trade theory relevant for these topics and demonstrate their use in empirical research on Austrian regions. The lecture concentrates on empirical findings and their interpretation. Basic knowledge on location theories and theories of regional development is therefore expected.

Content:
Part 1: Urban and rural areas – evolutions and determinants
- Why core and periphery? Drivers and shape of the spatial structure in Austria
- Austrian cites in the European city hierarchy – positioning and challenges
- What about the periphery? Rural areas in the international competition
- Rising disparities? Empirical evidence and the impact of (EU-)Cohesion policy
Part 2: Major challenges for Austrian cities and regions
- Globalisation: economic mechanisms, spatial effects, regional policy options
- Eastern integration and its impact on Austrian regions
- Structural Change: tertiarization and spatial development
- Demographic Change: Impacts on Austrian regions
- Employment: regional labour markets and the influence of migration

Method:
Theoretical and empirical inputs; focus on the discussion and interpretation of the topics addressed. An ex-ante reading of the literature provided is recommended.

Assessment and permitted materials
